Fall In Love with Your New Community

Relocating to a new area can be both exciting and overwhelming, whether you’re moving for the military, work, or a fresh start. It’s easy to feel disconnected at first, but with the right approach, you can quickly become familiar with your new area and build a community that makes you feel right at home. We are excited to share some of our favorite tried and true methods that help to make the transition more enjoyable.

One of the best ways to get familiar with your new area is to research things to do at the new location like you are planning a vacation. Many towns and cities have a Visitor/Travel section on their websites that often include event calendars, lists of local shops, and recommendations for nearby attractions. If you’re moving to a smaller town that may not have this type of resource, look at the county or surrounding area’s websites. Another tip for smaller towns is to search for local Facebook groups where residents will post helpful information about events and local happenings (usually there’s great conversations about restaurants, too!). Farmer’s markets and small local shops are a great way to meet people and find unique items, delicious foods, and friendly conversations. Additionally, military families have the advantage of using their bases’ MWR page to gain access to events and activities both on and off base. Exploring your new area like a tourist can be like a fun staycation! Plan day trips to visit popular landmarks, check out museums, or a day of meals at top-recommended restaurants broken up by hitting the local shops!

Getting involved in groups is another great way to mix into your new community. Many towns offer family-friendly spots, such as the local library, which often hosts free events and activities. Sports leagues, whether for yourself or your children, are an excellent way to meet new people, stay active, and engage with others. If sports aren’t your thing, use platforms like Meetup or Nextdoor to find groups that share the same interests or hobbies as you. These social networks have all sorts of options like hiking, book clubs, crafting, or photography. Getting involved in whatever type of community fits you best will help to grow roots in your new location.
